What is a System Admin’s Greatest Fear?

An administrator’s greatest fear isn’t a server crashing in the middle of the night. It’s the feeling that everything is running smoothly, while underneath lie dozens of security “black holes” that you are completely unaware of. Two years ago, I took over a system for a startup with 50 employees.

Everything looked fine at first glance until I ran my first vulnerability scan. The results sent shivers down my spine: an old printer in the warehouse was still running firmware from 2017, affected by the EternalBlue vulnerability (CVE-2017-0144). If just one computer were infected with malware, a hacker could use that printer as a pivot point to attack the entire Domain Controller.

Before choosing Nessus, I carefully considered several options:

  • Nmap: Extremely fast but mainly for port scanning and OS fingerprinting. Nmap cannot pinpoint complex CVEs without specialized scripts.
  • OpenVAS (GVM): Powerful and completely free. However, the installation is cumbersome, the database updates slowly, and the interface is quite difficult for beginners.
  • Manual Checking: This method is only feasible for tiny systems with fewer than 5 devices.

Nessus Essentials: A Free but Powerful Weapon

After much trial and error, Nessus Essentials is the most balanced choice. This is the free version of Tenable Nessus—the gold standard in the security industry. This version allows you to scan up to 16 IP addresses. This number is more than enough to protect the most critical “pillars” like Web Servers, Databases, or Firewalls in lab environments and small businesses.

Step 1: Rapid Deployment with Docker

Instead of installing directly on the OS, I always prefer using Docker to keep the system clean. First, register for an Activation Code on the Tenable homepage. Then, open your Terminal and run the following command:

To make management more effective, keep these small tips in mind:

  1. Schedule Automatic Scans: Don’t wait for an incident to happen before scanning. Set up a scan schedule for 2 AM every Sunday to avoid affecting user bandwidth.
  2. Leverage the Executive Summary: When you need to report to management, export a PDF in the Executive Summary format. It briefly summarizes the number of vulnerabilities using charts, helping bosses grasp the situation without getting lost in technical jargon.
  3. Beware of False Positives: Sometimes Nessus reports incorrectly due to misidentifying a version. Always double-check manually before making major changes to the system.
